Campaign Launched to Save Buxton Hospital Services

Concerns Raised by Residents Over Outpatient Services Relocation From Buxton Hospital to Stockport
Outpatient services currently offered at  Buxton hospital are set to move to Stockport at the end of March, sparking significant concern among local residents.

Many in the community have voiced their frustration, urging health authorities to reconsider the decision, which they fear will place additional strain on patients who rely on accessible care close to home.

The transfer means that people from Buxton and surrounding villages will face longer journeys for routine appointments, potentially impacting those with limited transport options or mobility issues.

Local campaigners argue the move overlooks the unique needs of High Peak's ageing population and the importance of maintaining strong healthcare provision within the town.

Health officials have stated the change is part of a wider strategy to consolidate services, but details on how patient care will be supported during the transition remain unclear.

The community now awaits further dialogue, with calls growing for a review to ensure Buxton retains vital healthcare services.

Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming meetings and share their concerns, emphasising the need for a solution that balances efficiency with the well-being of High Peak families.

High Peak MP Jon Pearce is bringing back his popular careers fair for a third year, and this time he's promising the biggest event yet.

The High Peak Careers, Skills & Jobs Fair takes place on Friday 20th March from 10am to 1pm at the Crescent Hotel in Buxton.

More than 40 employers will be there, covering everything from entry-level roles to senior positions across a range of industries.

Last year's fairs in Buxton and Glossop drew over 700 people and connected them with 95 employers - numbers Pearce is hoping to beat this time around.

"The energy at our previous fairs has been absolutely electric," he said. "Seeing people of all ages finding new opportunities and building confidence in their futures is exactly why I do this work."

Previous employers have included Buxton Lime, Severn Trent, Nestlé Waters, Derbyshire Police, High Peak Borough Council, Derbyshire NHS, Chatsworth House, and the British Army. This year's lineup promises to be just as varied.

Beyond job openings, the fair will showcase apprenticeships, training programmes, and skills workshops designed to help people at any stage of their career.

In a thoughtful touch, the event will run a dedicated Neurodiverse Hour from 10–11am to ensure everyone feels welcome and supported.

"Whether you're 16 or 60, looking for your first job or your next career move, there's something here for you," Pearce added.

Entry is free. More details are available at: jon4highpeak.com/highpeakjobsfair

New Mills Artist to Grace the Buxton Fringe Programme

A New Mills artist is set to give this summer's Buxton Fringe a look as distinctive as the festival itself.

Andrea Joseph, a member of High Peak Artists, has been chosen as the cover artist for the 2026 Buxton Fringe programme. Her pen illustration - titled "Show! Here! Today!" - features a bird loaded with all manner of artistic props, capturing the creativity and sheer ingenuity that defines the Fringe every year.

Fringe marketing officer Stephanie Billen said the design was impossible to forget. "It captures all the many types of entertainment one might have at the Fringe and the sheer ingenuity of our entrants as they put their shows together, often on a shoestring."

Originally from South Wales, Andrea now calls New Mills home. As well as her illustration work, she runs drawing events across the High Peak and works with local charities. Her distinctive style mixes text with images, using pens, coloured pencil, gouache, and collage to create work that's playful, detailed, and unmistakably hers.

As for the bird? "Where that idea came from I have no idea!" she laughs.

The Buxton Fringe runs 8–26 July 2026 and is currently open for entries. The full programme lands in June. You can find more of Andrea's work on Instagram at @aheavysoul.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:

"Mam Tor" means Mother Hill, referring to the smaller "baby" hills created by its constant landslides. This movement forced the permanent closure of the A625 road across its face in 1979.
