Snake Pass to Close for 18 Days in June for Essential Ground Investigation Works

Derbyshire County Council has confirmed the A57 will shut between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir from 15 June to 3 July as engineers investigate ongoing ground instability.

Drivers who rely on the A57 Snake Pass should plan ahead: the road is set to close for 18 days next month as engineers carry out essential ground investigation works at the Doctor's Gate site.

Derbyshire County Council has confirmed the closure will run from 15th June to 3rd July, affecting the stretch between Derbyshire Level in Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir. The road will reopen as soon as the work is complete, which could be earlier than the advertised date, and access will be maintained "whenever reasonably possible" on the affected length.

The investigation is focused on the Doctor's Gate section of the road, a site that has long been identified as a particular concern due to the underlying geology. Snake Pass is one of England's highest-risk roads, regularly closed by landslips and poor weather.

Charlotte Hill, cabinet member for highways at Derbyshire County Council, said: "Snake Pass presents a long-standing and complex engineering challenge due to its underlying geology. Addressing this safely requires detailed investigation and significant resources. We are working with the East Midlands Combined County Authority to explore opportunities that could help secure the long-term resilience of the A57."

Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, added: "I know this closure will be frustrating for residents, commuters and businesses who rely on this route every day, but the condition of Snake Pass cannot keep being ignored."

The council said the investigation would enable proposals to be developed and discussed with government partners. Drivers are advised to allow extra time and plan alternative routes via the A624 through Hayfield or the A6 through Chapel-en-le-Frith.
