Buxton's £100m Town Centre Transformation Is Finally Under Way - and 200 New Car Parking Spaces Are Coming First |
Capital&Centric has submitted final plans to replace The Springs Shopping Centre with a new neighbourhood of homes, bars, cafés, and riverside public spaces, with a brand-new car park opening in spring 2027. |
After seven years of planning, Buxton's long-awaited town centre transformation has reached a major milestone.
Developer Capital&Centric has lodged a full planning application for a £100 million-plus overhaul of The Springs Shopping Centre site, working in partnership with High Peak Borough Council to deliver what could be one of the most significant changes to Buxton's town centre in a generation.
The plans, designed by Stephenson Hamilton Risley Studio, will replace the existing shopping centre with 332 homes for rent, a mix of townhouses and flats, alongside space for bars, shops and cafés.
Resident amenities will include a gym, a mini cinema and a co-working space. The development will also reopen the River Wye through the site, creating new green public spaces for dining, events and leisure, and improving the pedestrian route from Buxton railway station into the heart of the town.
The designs draw consciously on Buxton's architectural heritage, incorporating colonnades, bay windows, limestone and gritstone to echo the town's historic character. Two new public toilet blocks and a feature lift serving the station entrance are also included in the proposals. Five per cent of the new homes will be available at reduced rent for local people.
Ahead of any construction work on The Springs site, High Peak Borough Council has announced plans to create 200 new car parking spaces on land next to Buxton station, a former railway depot, to address parking concerns raised by residents and businesses. The new multi-storey car park is due to open in spring 2027 if planning permission is granted.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said: "There's a real opportunity here to create something that celebrates Buxton's heritage and character while also giving the town centre the revitalisation it deserves. We can't wait to get spades in the ground and make this vision a reality."
Deputy council leader Damien Greenhalgh added: "We have been working on the redevelopment of the town centre for the past seven years. I am excited and pleased to say we have now reached a major milestone."
A public consultation on the plans is expected in the coming months.
