High Peak residents are on alert as the Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings, forecasting significant snowfall and icy conditions in the coming days.

According to the latest updates, a yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in effect from 6 am on Thursday, February 8, until 6 am on Friday, February 9. An amber warning, indicating more severe conditions, will be active from 12 pm to 6 pm on Thursday, covering areas including the Peak District, Matlock, Wirksworth, and Ashbourne.

The Met Office warns that snow accumulations could reach 10-15 cm widely, with higher elevations above 300 meters potentially seeing up to 25 cm. Strong easterly winds may lead to drifting snow, exacerbating travel difficulties.

Residents should anticipate travel disruptions, including road closures and delays in public transport services. There is also a possibility of power outages and some rural communities becoming temporarily isolated.

In response, Derbyshire County Council has deployed gritting crews to key routes such as the Cat and Fiddle, Axe Edge, and Snake Pass. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and consider postponing non-essential journeys.

To stay safe during this period, residents are encouraged to:

- Plan routes carefully and allow extra time for travel.

- Check for road closures and public transport delays before setting out.

- Equip vehicles with essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, torch, ice scraper, warning triangle, high-visibility vest, and a mobile phone charger.

- Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and heed official advice.

For those traveling on foot or by bicycle, it's advisable to use main roads and pavements, which are more likely to have been treated and are less slippery.

As the situation develops, staying informed and prepared will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by the impending winter weather.
