The Glossop Neighbourhood Spot That Just Won a Michelin Bib Gourmand

Almanac has brought nostalgic, seasonal British cookery to the High Street and the Michelin inspectors have taken notice.

If you are looking for the most exciting food story in the High Peak right now, you will find it behind the café curtains of a small, unassuming building on Glossop High Street West.

Almanac, a neighbourhood restaurant and cocktail bar, has just been awarded a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland. It is the only restaurant in Glossop to hold the accolade, which recognises establishments that offer exceptional quality food at great value.

The venue is the brainchild of chef-proprietor Luke Payne, who has already built a formidable reputation five miles down the road at the much-lauded The Pack Horse . At Almanac, he has created a space that feels both intimate and ambitious. Downstairs is a cosy bar serving natural wines, oysters, and cocktails; upstairs is a simple, candlelit dining room with brown leather banquettes and framed oil paintings.

The menu focuses on seasonal small plates that celebrate traditional British cooking with a modern, umami-rich twist. The Michelin inspectors were particularly taken with the kitchen's unapologetic approach, noting: "The cooking is traditional and proud of it; order the mince on dripping toast for evidence."

Other standout dishes include the affectionately named "Orbs of Joy" - Roscoff onions slow-braised in a rich chicken broth until meltingly tender and a toweringly meaty mutton merguez with pease pudding.
Reacting to the award, the restaurant team stated: "This award recognises great cooking at exceptional value - which holds true to exactly what we set out to achieve for this tiny restaurant on this gorgeous Glossop High Street. Nostalgic, seasonal cookery has a firm place on our High Street now."

With lunch plates available for under £10 and a menu that changes weekly to reflect the best local produce, Almanac is proving that you do not need to travel into the city for top-tier, thoughtfully prepared food.

Almanac is located at 54, High Street West, Glossop.

The bar is open Wednesday to Saturday from 12pm, with the kitchen opening from 5pm on Wednesdays and 12pm Thursday to Saturday.
