From Derelict Shed to Luxury Getaway: The £60,000 Water Tower Airbnb on the Edge of the Peak District

A couple spent £60,000 converting a derelict 1930s Art Deco water tower in Bolsover, on the edge of the Peak District, into a luxury Airbnb — complete with a glass-floored shower, spiral staircase, and six acres of countryside.

Tamara Keeling, 50, first saw the imposing Art Deco tower in Bolsover, on the edge of the Peak District, when it featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs in 2003. After years of trying, she and her husband finally purchased the derelict structure in 2016, and began the conversion in 2020.

The 15-metre (49ft) reinforced concrete tower, built in 1938, had spent its later years as a garden shed and even a skateboard ramp before the couple began work. The finished space now features a striking spiral staircase, a king-sized bed, a log burner, a bespoke hand-built kitchen, and one of the most talked-about showers in Derbyshire, a glass-floored cubicle suspended above a void in the original concrete floor.

Set within six acres of countryside, the tower sleeps two and is designed as a romantic retreat for couples. Guests staying at The Tower can explore the nearby Peak District, visit Bolsover Castle, or simply enjoy the remarkable surroundings of a building that has been given a new lease of life.

Stays at The Tower are available from £185 per night through Airbnb.
