Derbyshire's First-Ever Red Routes Arrive at Castleton and Mam Tor |
New double red lines and a £70 fixed penalty are being introduced to tackle inconsiderate parking at one of the Peak District's busiest tourist hotspots. |
Derbyshire's first-ever red routes are being introduced at Castleton and Mam Tor, as the county council moves to tackle what it has described as "inconsiderate parking" at one of the Peak District's most heavily visited destinations.
The new double red lines, which prohibit stopping at any time, will be painted on Old Mam Tor Road, the route from Old Mam Tor Road to Blue John Cavern, Rushup Edge Road to Rushup Edge Farm, and Winnats Pass to Sparrowpit. Installation is due to begin after 5 May. Motorists who ignore the restrictions will face a fixed penalty of £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
In addition to the red routes, new double yellow lines are being introduced on a number of streets within Castleton village itself — including How Lane, Weaving Avenue, Bargate, Back Street, Castle Street, Pindale Road, Milbridge and Hollowford Road, to address obstructive parking that has long frustrated local residents and emergency services alike.
The measures follow a public consultation held last year and represent the first time Derbyshire County Council has deployed the red route designation, previously associated primarily with London's busiest roads.
Charlotte Hill, the council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "With these measures we have listened carefully and tried to balance the needs of local people, business and visitors to this beautiful part of our county. It's essential residents can rely on emergency and other services to reach them no matter the time of day, which can be difficult when people have double-parked or blocked driveways."
The 55 existing parking bays at the far end of Old Mam Tor Road will remain free to use at all times, and unmarked lay-bys along the routes to Blue John Cavern, Rushup Edge Farm and Sparrowpit will also remain unrestricted.
