Buxton Town Hall Put Up for Sale by Council

The Grade II listed landmark is seeking a new owner as the council looks to relocate.

One of Buxton’s most prominent architectural landmarks, the Grade II listed Town Hall, has been officially put up for sale by High Peak Borough Council.

The 19th-century building, which dominates the Market Place, has been deemed "no longer fit for purpose" for modern local government needs. The council is currently exploring options to create a new, more efficient workspace within the town centre as part of the wider Revitalising Buxton project.

While no asking price has been publicly listed, the council has stressed that any prospective buyer must demonstrate a commitment to preserving the building’s rich heritage.

"The council is very mindful this is an important historic building in the town," a spokesperson stated. "Any new owner will be required to show that they will be a responsible custodian of the property who can preserve the building's protected heritage features in a sustainable way."

The sale has sparked intense discussion among residents, with many hoping the building can be repurposed into a community asset or a mixed-use venue that retains public access to its historic interior.
