Spend a Penny - Literally: Peak District Introduces 50p Charge at Three Refurbished Toilets |
The Peak District National Park Authority has introduced a 50p contactless-only fee at newly refurbished toilets at Dovedale, Hartington, and Millers Dale, with every penny going back into the park. |
Visitors to some of the Peak District's most popular spots will now need to budget an extra 50p for a comfort break, after the Peak District National Park Authority introduced a charge at three of its recently refurbished public toilets.
The new payment policy applies to facilities at Dovedale, Hartington, and Millers Dale, three of the park's busiest visitor destinations. The charge of 50p per entry is cashless only, with contactless payment the sole accepted method. The fee was introduced at Hartington on 30 April, followed by Millers Dale on 1st May, with Dovedale's charge coming into effect in early May.
The authority has been straightforward about its reasoning. "Every penny goes straight back into helping us look after the national park," it said in a statement. The move comes in the context of wider funding pressures facing national parks across England, and follows comments from the park's own leadership that new revenue streams were needed to maintain and improve visitor facilities.
The three toilets in question have all been recently refurbished, and the charge is intended to help cover ongoing maintenance and cleaning costs. The National Park Authority has indicated it will monitor the policy and review the charge going forward.
For visitors planning a day out at Dovedale's famous stepping stones, the Hartington village green, or the limestone gorge at Millers Dale, it is worth having a contactless card or phone to hand, and perhaps a little extra patience at busy times.
