The Butcher That Has Served Whaley Bridge for 125 Years - and Shows No Sign of Stopping |
Edwin Wild & Son on Old Road is a third-generation family business with its own farm, its own standards, and a community loyalty that was tested and proved during the 2019 dam crisis. |
Some businesses are part of a town. Edwin Wild & Son is part of Whaley Bridge's identity.
The family butcher on Old Road has been trading for over 125 years, serving generations of Whaley Bridge households with meat sourced from the family's own farm. Third-generation butcher Byron Rowbottom now runs the shop, continuing a tradition that stretches back to the late nineteenth century, long before supermarkets, long before online delivery, and long before the idea of "locally sourced" became a marketing phrase rather than simply the way things were done.
The shop's philosophy has not changed with the times, because it does not need to. The meat is locally reared, the quality is exceptional, and the staff know their customers by name. Reviews consistently praise the service as much as the product, the kind of attentive, knowledgeable counter service that has become increasingly rare on the British high street.
The business's commitment to Whaley Bridge was put to the test in August 2019, when the Toddbrook Reservoir dam failure forced the evacuation of 1,500 homes and businesses across the town. Byron was among the last to leave, reluctant to abandon what he described as his "heart and soul", a meat business that could not simply be locked up and walked away from. He worked through the night in the days that followed, putting in 18-hour shifts to recover stock and reopen as quickly as possible.
"Something that could've been horrific," he said afterwards, "has actually turned into something that's bought loads of people in and has shown that actually a community is still here."
With Toddbrook Reservoir now beginning to refill after six years of repair work, and the town looking forward to a new sailing club, a restored Memorial Park, and a new bridge over the spillway, it feels like an appropriate moment to celebrate the businesses that kept Whaley Bridge going through those difficult years, and that are still here, still serving the community, as the reservoir comes back to life.
